GCSE Results Day 2023

The hard work of teachers and students has paid off, as students celebrate their excellent GCSE results at Saffron Walden County High School.  24 students gained 5 or more of the coveted grade 9s, with Ella Chen achieving 12 of these top grades, an achievement matched by only a tiny number of students nationally. “I’m so happy,” said Ella, who is now looking forward to joining SWCHS 6^th form. “None of us would have been able to achieve this without the school’s support.”

“I’m really grateful for all the excellent teaching,” remarked Noah Poulter, who gained nine grade 9s. “All the hard work paid off,” added Samuel Allan, who achieved eight grade 9s, along with grade 7 piano. Olivia Sanders, who achieved ten 8s and 9s, said that she was “over the moon.”

A number of high-performing students had also had sporting success. Mae Bissett (8 grade 9s), Imogen Fisher (7 grade 9s) and Carrie Law (all grade 8s and 9s), were also part of the SWCHS hockey team who were regional finalists this year.

Zac Brunner, who was awarded nine grades above 7, including five grade 9s, had spent two terms in Italy during the last two years, as part of the British Ski Academy. He will now be studying A levels at SWCHS, while taking part in international ski racing.

Other notable performances included Patrick Bergin (10 grade 9s), Ali Tobitt and Clara Fenwick (9 grade 9s each), Elizabeth Drury and Jed Bailey (8 grade 9s each), Eoin Bailey (7 grade 9s), and Arthur Poublan and Awab Kazus (all grade 7-9).

A number of students achieved starred Distinctions: Tessa Morel in Digital Information Technology, Matilda Robinson-Miller and Kayleigh Weyman in Health and Social Care.

“We are incredibly proud of our students,” commented Headteacher, Polly Lankester. “We hope they enjoy celebrating these excellent results with family and friends.   Their success today is a reflection of their hard work and determination and also the high-quality teaching and support provided by the staff team at SWCHS.  I am delighted that so many of them have achieved the results they need to access their preferred options for next year and also that so many of them are choosing to progress into our Sixth Form.  I wish all of the class of 2023 the very best for their future.”
