Key Stage 4
At Key Stage 4 SWCHS students access 3 hours of PE per 2 week cycle as part of their core provision. A range of activities conforming to National Curriculum guidelines are available to all students. Over the course of a year students will cover the following National Curriculum areas: Games, Gymnastics, Athletics and Fitness.
A full programme of extra-curricular activities supports the curriculum provision and is open to all students; details can be found via the extra-curricular link.
Students may also opt in to GCSE courses in Dance and/or Physical Education or a Cambridge National in Sports Studies. These courses involve a further 5 hours per 2 week cycle in addition to the core PE time.

The human body and movement in physical activity and sport 30%
Examined by a 1hr 15mins written paper

Socio-cultural influences and well-being in physical activity and sport 30%

Non Examined Assessment
Practical performance in physical activity and sport 40%
3 sports – 2 game & 1 individual or 2 individual and 1 game
Internal assessment with external moderation.
GCSE Dance
AQA exam Board 60% practical 40% Theory
Component 1 Practical
Performance 30% of GCSE. Set Phrases through a solo performance (one minute duration)
Choreography 30% of GCSE. Solo or group choreography. Between 2 ½ and 3 ½ minutes duration.
Component 2 Dance Appreciation
40% of GCSE Written examination 1 hour 30 minutes.
Assessed on Knowledge and understanding of choreographic processes and performing skills. Critical appreciation of own work. Critical appreciation of professional works.
Cambridge National in Sports Studies
The Cambridge National in Sports Studies takes a more sector-based focus, whilst also encompassing some core sport/physical education themes. Learners have the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge about different types of sport and physical activity, skills development and sports leadership to their own practical performance. They will learn about contemporary issues in sport such as funding, participation, ethics and role models, and sport and the media. Learners will develop an appreciation of the importance of sport locally and nationally, different ways of being involved in sport and of how this shapes the sports industry.
