In today’s world business is all around us, which makes it a constantly evolving, exciting subject. Study of Business requires a variety of skills, such as analysing, interpreting and responding to data, calculating financial ratios, and communicating your analysis and arguments. You will investigate a variety of contemporary issues, such as globalisation and how technology is changing business.

Subject requirements:

Minimum GCSE of 5 in Business (if studied), and 5 in English and Maths

Course content

You look at a variety of firms in different industries, starting with: What is business? Why do businesses exist? What are their aims? How do you measure their success? You will then look at the role of managers, finding out about different styles of leadership and the way decisions are made using scientific methods and intuition. You will examine functional strategies businesses use to be successful.

How can businesses change to improve their performance? You will analyse the strategic position of firms, using tools like financial ratios. You will consider external factors on businesses, such as the economy. You will see how firms choose their strategic direction, which markets to compete in and what products to offer. You will investigate how firms manage change.

Assessment Criteria

Three 2-hour examinations. You will be assessed through a mixture of multiple choice, short answer (including calculations), data response and essay questions.
