We hope that in Year 11, students will continue to embrace the challenges of Saffron Walden County High School. Year 11 is arguably the most important year in your child's education. It is a time where they can make the biggest impact on their lives by ensuring they get the very best from their studies by putting in their very best effort. I am confident that all students will rise to the new challenges that this year will bring. In particular, they should be focused from the start, building on the progress of the last two years and listening carefully to the guidance being given by their teachers as they prepare for their GCSE exams.
We have already seen some excellent results from the assessments taken in Year 10 and we are hoping that this positive trend continues with the end results in August. You will have received the latest progress check at the end of Year 10 which has helped you to understand what your child needs to do to improve and informed us as to how best to deploy the support we have available.
Punctuality and attendance will continue to be monitored closely. We appreciate that absence is at times unavoidable, but request that parents ensure they contact us as early as possible to report any absence. In Year 11 it is obviously very important that attendance is as high as possible (absence of below 96% can have a negative impact on your child's GCSE results).
In November and January all Year 11 students will sit a full series of GCSE mock exams under full exam conditions. These are designed to help them prepare for the final series of exams next summer. Further guidance will be given on revision techniques and I will write to parents closer to the time with more details.
You will have a chance to meet your child's teachers at the Year 11 parents evening which is a key meeting enabling you to better understand your child's progress, giving you a clearer indication of what results they may achieve. It is an excellent opportunity to ask any questions that relate to each of the subjects being studied.
It is very advantageous if parents would continue to monitor the use of the planner from home. This is especially true with homework, where students should be completing an hour a day. The ongoing relationship between school and home is so important and will have an impact on student’s final results.
Lastly, I would just like to say how much my year group have always impressed me in their continued drive to become the best they can and their determination in the face of adversity. I believe that the partnership between students, parents and the school is crucial if our students are to reach their full potential. All students will be supported by their form tutor along with the additional support of the year office team. I am so looking forward to this year as we see these young people go from strength to strength and I anticipate outstanding GCSE results as a reward for their efforts.
