MEDICAL ROOM and Counselling

MEDICAL ROOM

We are very fortunate to have trained First Aiders throughout the school to ensure an immediate response whilst awaiting the attendance of a member of the medical team.

The medical team will look after pupils if they are ill or injured and will contact you if necessary. This may be if your child is unwell and needs to come home or be seen by a doctor/attend hospital. The nurse is only expected to deal with issues that arise during the school day; please do not send pupils in to see the nurse with a known illness or injury - this is the role of your GP.

Where possible the medical team will make every effort to return your child to their lessons, to maximise their learning potential. Our mission, as a medical team, is a commitment to work with students, families, the school and its community to promote optimal health and academic success for all students at Saffron Walden County High School.

School Counsellor

We are fortunate in having the services of a BACP Accredited and registered therapeutic counsellor in school. The counsellor works in school full-time and students can be referred to the service through the following routes: student self-referral, Year Achievement Coordinator, Form and Subject teacher and parental referral. A drop-in counselling service is available on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 1.10pm-1.50pm and on Wednesdays from 12.50pm-1.20pm; students can speak to the counsellor without a pre-arranged appointment.  Alongside our full-time counsellor we have two further part-time therapists who make up the counselling team.   The Counselling Lead will allocate referrals ensuring the best fit for the student.  Additionally, we also offer students a drop-in support service at lunchtimes in Learning Support.

Students will be seen by the counsellor during lesson time, but every effort is made to minimise disruption to subject lessons.

This is a busy service and there may be times when a student who has been referred may have to wait to be seen by the counsellor; the counsellors work very hard to keep waiting times down to an absolute minimum. School counselling is a confidential service and so it is not always possible for you to receive feedback about sessions. We must stress, however, if there are any concerns about a student’s well-being and safety, parents will be notified. If a referral to the school counselling service is not considered appropriate then the counsellor will always signpost and/or refer students on to other outside therapeutic agencies.

As with the School Nurse, the counselling service where appropriate will make every effort to work with students, families and the school to promote student well-being in order that students can work to their full potential.
